  • Show All Hidden Devices in Device Manager
    Devices that are installed but are not currently connected to the computer (such as a USB device or "ghosted" devices) are not normally displayed in Device Manager. This tweak causes all devices to be shown.

    Using this tweak, when you insert a USB Storage Device, you will hear the normal insert sound from your computer, but the USB Storage Device will not be accessible from "Computer".

  • Show Friendly HTTP Error Messages
    By default Internet Explorer will show a friendly version of any HTTP errors it receives, for example Error 404 Page Moved. This tweak controls that functionality allowing it to be enabled or disabled.

    This setting allows you to customize Internet Explorer by using your own window title. For example you could rename IE to 'My Browser' or anything else you like!

  • Disable Internet Explorer Automatic Proxy Caching
    When you configure Internet Explorer to use automatic proxy configuration it caches the returned information. If a proxy server fails you may therefore get an error message even though others are available. With this setting you can disable caching to ensure the browser always checks for the latest proxy information.

    If your network adapter has an onboard processor, designed to offload network processing from the system CPU, it is disabled by default. This setting allows you to enable it and increase the processing speed of your system.

  • Disable Dynamic Domain Name Updates
    Windows support Dynamic Domain Name System (DDNS) updates and is enabled by default. This setting allows you to control whether network adapters should send updates.

    This parameter specifies the path to the standard internet database files (HOSTS, LMHOSTS, NETWORKS, PROTOCOLS) used by the Windows Sockets interface.

    This setting controls whether Windows should automatically attempt to locate available file shares and printers by crawling the local network.

  • Prevent Access to the Contents of Selected Drives
    This restriction prevents users from using Computer or Explorer to access the content of selected drives. Also, they cannot use Run, Map Network Drive, or the Dir command to view the directories on these drives.

    Windows gives the ability to restrict the applications that can be run by users on a workstation.

  • Require Users to Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete Before Logon
    This setting controls whether users are required to press Ctrl + Alt + Delete as a security precaution before logging into the system. This guarantees that the authentic windows logon prompt appears, protecting the system from programs that mimic a logon to retrieve password information.

  • Enable Automatic Admin Logon to Windows Vista
    Windows includes a feature that allows you to configure the computer to automatically logon to the network, bypassing the Winlogon dialog box. You can bypass this function by holding down the SHIFT key during the boot or logoff process. The password is stored in registry, which means anyone who has access to the machine has access to the password.

    A time limit can be enforced on the period available to logon via remote access before the connection is terminated.

    You can use the remote access account lockout feature to specify how many times a remote access authentication has to fail against a valid user account before the user is denied access. Use this tweak to set the number of failed logins before the account is locked-out and the time before the lockout is reset.

  • Disable Drag-and-Drop on the Start Menu
    This restriction prevents users from modifying the Start menu by dragging and dropping items.

  • Remove "All Programs" Button from the Start Menu
    This restriction is used to remove the "All Programs" button which displays a list of all the installed applications. This setting only applies to the Windows Start Menu, not the Classic Start Menu.

  • Disable "Lock the Taskbar"
    This restriction is used to force the locking of the taskbar and restrict users from making any changes to its position.

    This setting removes the context menus (right click on the taskbar) for the system tray, including the Start button, Tab control, and Clock.

  • Reboot Windows After a Crash
    This parameter controls whether Windows should automatically reboot after a system failure or if the blue crash screen should be displayed.

  • Quick Edit the Command Prompt
    Quick Edit allows you to easily cut and paste text in the command prompt window using the mouse. The ability to use the Edit menu options is still possible.

    Command completion allows you to type a portion of a file name, and then have the system complete the rest by pressing the specified key. This is similar to the UNIX shell command completion feature. when you type the first part of a filename then press the specified key, Windows will complete the filename for you. Pressing the key multiple times will scroll through all the options.

    Windows normally delays menus before they are displayed. For regular users this delay can become annoying, with this setting you to change the delay time or remove it altogether.

    This setting controls whether encrypted/compressed files and folders are shown in explorer using a different color to make them easily distinguishable.

    This tweak removes the context menu that would normally appear when the user right clicks on the desktop or in the Explorer right results pane.

  • Default Disk Utilities
    These settings control the default tools used for Windows disk management including Backup, Defrag and Cleanup. Changing these values will alter the programs used when you right-click a disk in Computer and select Properties > Tools. If you set the value to an invalid path or filename Windows will show an error when you attempt to launch the tool.

  • Drive Types to Start Automatically
    When using AutoRun Windows can detect and automatically start programs when new media is inserted into a drive. By default, CD-ROM and hard drives will automatically launch, but removable and network drives will not.

  • Disable Tracking of Broken Shortcut Links
    The NTFS File System in Windows Vista automatically attempts to locate broken shortcut destinations by searching all paths that are associated with it. This setting can be used to disable that feature.

    Even when you have configured Windows to display all file extensions, there are still some which remain hidden. This allows potentially dangerous files to be masked as safe files, fooling the user into executing them. This tweak helps expose those file extensions.

  • Highlight New Programs on Start Menu
    When you install a new Windows program the icon will be highlighted on the Start Menu to allow you to quickly locate it. This tweak controls whether new programs should be highlighted. This only effects the Enhanced Windows Vista Start Menu, it will not effect the "Classic" version.

  • View Enhanced Start Menu Folders
    These settings allow you to customize which items are shown on the Windows enhanced Start Menu. These settings will not effect the Start Menu in Classic mode.

  • Disable the Quick Launch on Taskbar
    If enable this setting, the quick launch bar will be disable and you can't be turned on.

  • Enable Group Similar Taskbar Buttons
    This setting is used to control whether similar items are grouped together as a single item or are displayed as individual buttons on the taskbar.

  • Clear the Page File at System Shutdown
    Windows does not normally clear or recreate the page file. On a heavily used system this can be both a security threat and performance drop. Enabling this setting will cause Windows to clear the page file whenever the system is shutdown. Please note on systems with large amounts of memory, and therefore large swap-file, this tweak could cause a delay at shutdown due to the additional time taken to clear the data from the file.

    This setting allows you to disable the creation of the Last Known Good configuration, which stores a copy of the configuration after each successful boot-up.

  • Hide Computer Management Option
    This setting allows you to remove the "Manage" option from the My Computer context menu. The Computer Management program is used to configure the system.
    The computer management application can still be used by running "compmgmt.msc".

  • Number of Page Table Entries
    Page Table Entries (PTEs) may become depleted or fragmented on systems that perform a large number input/output (I/O) actions. When they become completely depleted the system may show a Stop error and halt. This tweak allows you to increase the number of PTEs available on the system.

    This setting controls whether the system should wait for the logon scripts to complete before starting the users shell or whether the scripts should run asynchronously.
